Stem Cell Therapy
Stem cells are the body's raw materials — cells from which all other cells with specialized functions are generated. Under the right conditions in the body or a laboratory, stem cells divide to form more cells called daughter cells.

These daughter cells either become new stem cells (self-renewal) or become specialized cells (differentiation) with a more specific function, such as blood cells, skin cells, cartilage cells or bone cells. No other cell in the body has the natural ability to generate new cell types. Researchers and doctors hope stem cell studies can help to generate healthy cells to replace diseased cells (regenerative medicine).

Stem cells can be guided into becoming specific cells that can be used to regenerate and repair diseased or damaged tissues in people. People who might benefit from stem cell therapies include those with osteoarthritis of the hips, knees, shoulders, spine, and most other joints of the body. We offer IV infusions based on our anecdotal experience and with the disclosure that they are highly investigational.

Although research into adult stem cells is promising, they remain investigational and unproven. These treatments are not approved by the FDA. Surgical procedures fall under the category of physician’s practice of medicine, wherein the physician and patient are free to consider their chosen course of treatment. The FDA does have guidelines about treatment and manipulation of a patient’s own tissues. We meet these guidelines by providing same day treatment with the patient’s own cells that undergo minimal manipulation and are inserted during the same procedure.

Stem cell therapy, also known as regenerative medicine, promotes the repair response of diseased, dysfunctional or injured tissue using stem cells or their derivatives. It is the next chapter in our orthopedic practice of medicine. Many have been told that they require surgery or other risky treatments for their ailments and are looking for non-invasive options. Some have heard about the compelling testimonials about stem cells in the literature and on various websites. Many have read about the results of stem cell treatments in animal models and in humans. We are a resource for patients who need access to regenerative care and give options to informed patients who seek modern regenerative therapy but desire convenience, quality and affordability.

Adipose derived stem cells may easily by utilized for cellular therapy since the cells are easy to obtain and generally very robust. Adipose fat is an abundant and reliable source of stem cells. Autologous stem cells from a person’s own fat are easy to harvest safely under local anesthesia are present in abundant in quantities.

Clinical success and favorable outcomes appear to be related directly to the quantity of stem cells deployed. Bone Marrow Aspirate Stem Cell Concentrate (BMAC) is a component of your bone marrow that contains Stem cells, growth factors and anti-inflammatory proteins which have been shown to promote healing as well as reduce symptoms of pain related to injuries, tendinitis and arthritis.

Stem cells can be found in many tissues throughout your body, but one of the richest sources is your bone marrow. Your bone marrow will be aspirated through a small needle puncture in your posterior iliac crest (pelvic bone) and placed in a special processing unit, which will concentrate your body’s stem cells, platelets and growth factors. The concentrate will be collected into a sterile syringe and injected into the targeted body area being treated.

BMAC may be recommended for patients that have failed other conservative therapies:physical therapy, medications, rest and other injections. It may also be an option for those that are not candidates for surgery or chose to avoid elective surgery.

Conditions that may be treated include: Osteoarthritis of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, hip, knee, ankle and foot. Select tendon injuries, labral tears and articular cartilage injuries.

Patients may experience soreness at the collection site and treatment site for a few days following the procedure. Most patients will see improvement within 1 to 2 months after treatment if successful. While BMAC is an innovative and often effective treatment option, it is considered investigational.



In recent years, stem cell infusion has become a breakthrough technology with thousands of people seeing the benefiting with varying degree. Regenerative medicine has much promise in the future of medicine. Stem cells could very well be the future and possibly a source of the fountain of youth. These results are indeed very promising, and perhaps a valid strategy to these approaches is to have very high expectations of this therapy. However, there are limitations to this therapy today and unfortunately many who make unrealistic claims regarding this therapy.

Tempering the anecdotal results with results can sometimes be disheartening. However, there are severe limitations to IV Infusions. The first limitation is something called the first pass effect. This effect (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_pass_effect) is also known as first pass metabolism or presystemic metabolism and mitigates the amount of stem cells or any drug that can traverse your blood stream due to the alveoli in your lungs capturing or filtering your blood when it is oxygenated. We do have a strategy to mitigate the first pass effect and there are numerous protocols being investigated to mitigate this effect further.
